Wandering, Begging Monks explores the apostolic lifestyle of monks in the fourth and fifth centuries Roman Empire who embraced total material renunciation, homelessness, and begging. Daniel Caner examines how these monks, often spiritual advisers to urban aristocrats, challenged episcopal authority and influenced the promotion of monasticism. Drawing on sources from Egypt, Syria, and Asia Minor, including legal codes and homilies, the book reveals patterns of ascetic dependency and teaching in the context of late Roman urban society. It includes the first annotated English translation of the biography of Alexander Akoimetos, providing a vivid portrayal of these charismatic early Christian figures.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

An apostolic lifestyle characterized by total material renunciation, homelessness, and begging was practiced by monks throughout the Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries. Such monks often served as spiritual advisors to urban aristocrats whose patronage gave them considerable authority and independence from episcopal control. This book is the first comprehensive study of this type of Christian poverty and the challenge it posed for episcopal authority and the promotion of monasticism in late antiquity.

Focusing on devotional practices, Daniel Caner draws together diverse testimony from Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, and elsewhereโ€”including the Pseudo-Clementine Letters to Virgins, Augustine's On the Work of Monks, John Chrysostom's homilies, and legal codesโ€”to reveal gospel-inspired patterns of ascetic dependency and teaching from the third to the fifth centuries. Throughout, his point of departure is social and cultural history, especially the urban social history of the late Roman empire.

He also introduces many charismatic individuals whose struggle to persist against church suppression of their chosen way of imitating Christ was fought with defiant conviction, and the book includes the first annotated English translation of the biography of Alexander Akoimetos (Alexander the Sleepless). Wandering, Begging Monks allows us to understand these fascinating figures of early Christianity in the full context of late Roman society.

Praised as "groundbreaking for those who study asceticism, monasticism, and church politics" (Journal of the American Academy of Religion), the book offers meticulous documentation of wandering and begging monks, especially in the eastern Mediterranean and North Africa (Byzantinische Zeitschrift). It is recognised as a first-rate study illuminating episcopal control dynamics and urban monasticism, advancing scholarship on ecclesiastical responses to poverty and social history (Catholic Historical Review). The engaging writing style makes complex historical topics accessible and compelling.
