It is 2030. A three-person human crew are on a shuttle travelling to Mars as part of a colonising mission.
Four years earlier, three robots were sent to the planet to build the base for the humans. But when the human crew arrive, they discover a third of the base has been destroyed. Each robot must be interrogated. But one of them is missing.
Searching for answers from the robots, the human crew discover that the machines have formed alliances, chosen their own names, and picked up some disturbing beliefs.
As the astronauts close in on the truth, it dawns on them that in this barren, hostile landscape, none of them are safe.
