Set amidst the social and political turmoil of 1968 in southern Virginia, A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci immerses readers into a gripping courtroom drama defined by racial tensions and the fight for justice. The story follows an unlikely duo of lawyers—Jack Lee, a white attorney from Freeman County, Virginia, and Desiree DuBose, a Black lawyer from Chicago—who join forces to defend Jerome Washington, a Black man wrongfully accused of the brutal murder of an elderly and wealthy white couple.

Jack Lee has lived his entire life in the shadow of systemic racism but has never found the courage to challenge it. When he takes on Jerome's case, he questions whether his legal expertise is sufficient to confront a biased legal system that is predisposed to convict his client. As the enormity of the stakes begins to dawn on him, Lee realises that the trial is about more than just proving innocence; it is a battle against ingrained societal prejudices.

Desiree DuBose, conversely, has dedicated her career to advocating for justice and equality. Her journey to Freeman County marks the beginning of a tense and complicated partnership with Lee. Despite their differences, DuBose and Lee find themselves united against a formidable prosecutor and the insidious forces that seek to undermine the progress achieved by the Civil Rights Movement.

The contrast between Lee and DuBose—both in their personal backgrounds and their professional experiences—highlights the complexities and nuances of the fight for justice. Alone, their efforts appear doomed to fail. However, when they pool their skills and determination, they offer a glimmer of hope for a fair trial and the possibility of overturning a seemingly inevitable guilty verdict.

Spanning over a decade in its creation, A Calamity of Souls breathes life into the historical setting of the late 1960s, capturing both the era's foreignness and its echoes in contemporary struggles. Readers will find themselves engrossed in a world of legal intrigue, racial tension, and the relentless pursuit of justice as Baldacci masterfully unravels this richly detailed and emotionally charged narrative.

A departure for Baldacci but worth it

Baldacci is a popular writer of best selling fiction that is normally the spy/thriller/suspense/serial killer variety. This one is different. While turning out his other best sellers, he has been working on this book as a side project for the last decade.

“Calamity of the Souls” is a legal drama set in the late 1960’s in a still fairly racist USA. Think “To Kill a Mockingbird”, which is actually referenced in the story a couple of times. It turns out that a lot of the book is based on Baldacci’s own life; he was also a lawyer and had a similar background to the main character.

Anyway, it is a great story, well written, as are all of Baldacci’s books. It is not “To Kill a Mockingbird” though.

About the Author

David Baldacci is one of the world's bestselling and favourite thriller writers. A former trial lawyer with a keen interest in world politics, he has specialist knowledge in the US political system and intelligence services, and his first book, Absolute Power, became an instant international bestseller, with the movie starring Clint Eastwood a major box office hit. He has since written more than forty bestsellers featuring, most recently, Travis Devine, Amos Decker, Aloysius Archer, and Atlee Pine. David is also the co-founder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across the US. Killer twists. Heroes to believe in. Trust Baldacci.
