We Are Here by Tim Denee and Chris McDowell is a captivating visual data book that offers a unique perspective on life in New Zealand. Through a compelling blend of charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, and illustrations, it reveals the intricate details of Kiwi life in 2018. The book doesn’t follow a traditional plot but rather presents a fascinating journey through the various facets of New Zealand's identity, geography, and society.

Clustered yet scattered, New Zealanders live across the country's diverse physical landscapes, experiencing its varied weather and environments. Each person has a distinctive view of Aotearoa, yet no single individual grasps the entire picture. We Are Here aims to bridge this gap, helping New Zealanders comprehend the scale, diversity, and complexities of their homeland. By transforming data into visually engaging graphics, Tim Denee and Chris McDowell illuminate the connections that bind New Zealanders to their land, history, and each other.

The book answers a wide range of intriguing questions: Who visits New Zealand? How abundant are the fish in its seas? How equal is the society? What are the common injuries? Where do pet cats roam at night? These questions are addressed through a rich tapestry of visuals that are not only functional and beautiful but also insightful and enlightening.

Each visualisation in We Are Here serves to make hidden patterns and trends visible, offering new insights into the everyday lives of New Zealanders. The graphics effectively communicate complex data in an accessible and engaging manner, providing readers with a deeper understanding of the country's dynamics.

Complementing these visual elements are essays by some of New Zealand's most esteemed thinkers. These essays delve into various aspects of society and culture, providing context and enriching the reader's experience. Together, the graphics and essays form a comprehensive package that tells an intricate story of where New Zealand stands in 2018.

In summary, We Are Here by Tim Denee and Chris McDowell is a must-have for anyone keen to gain a deeper understanding of New Zealand. It is a visually stunning, thought-provoking book that connects readers to the essence of Aotearoa, making it an invaluable addition to any collection.
