The Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich by Callum MacDonald delves into the rise of SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, who climbed from relative obscurity in the 1920s to a position of immense power within the Third Reich by 1936. Considered the most dangerous man in Nazi Germany after Hitler, Heydrich served as Himmler's deputy, yet even Himmler himself feared him.

Operating in secret, Heydrich devoted his efforts to organising the Holocaust. On 27 May 1942, a Czech agent, as part of a team of parachutists trained by SOE, attacked Heydrich by throwing a bomb at the passing Mercedes in which he was travelling. Eight days later, Heydrich succumbed agonisingly to his wounds.

The assassination sent shock waves through the Nazi leadership, triggering ferocious reprisals against Czechs and Jews. The most notorious of these was the complete obliteration of Lidice and the massacre of its inhabitants.

Based on original archive material and interviews with surviving members of SOE and Czech military intelligence, this gripping story of danger and tragedy unfolds with the intensity and intrigue of a spy thriller.
