Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Cartiers is a captivating and intimate history of the famed Cartier jewellery dynasty, meticulously compiled by Francesca Cartier Brickell, a direct descendant with unprecedented access to her family’s guarded archives. This enthralling narrative unfolds the story of four generations, showcasing how a modest Parisian jewellery store blossomed into a global symbol of opulence and luxury.

Central to the tale are three visionary brothers: Louis, Pierre, and Jacques Cartier, each contributing remarkably unique talents that cemented the brand's international fame in the early twentieth century. Louis, the imaginative mastermind, revolutionised men’s fashion with the creation of the first wristwatch, tailored to assist an aviator friend. Pierre, the astute businessman, astoundingly acquired Cartier's New York headquarters in exchange for a magnificent pearl necklace. Meanwhile, Jacques, the adventurous gemologist, embarked on extensive travels to India, forging connections that brought the world’s finest gemstones like rubies, emeralds, and sapphires to Cartier, inspiring iconic pieces like the Tutti Frutti jewellery.

Drawing from her great-grandfather’s life stories, Francesca Cartier Brickell embarks on a global journey, piecing together her ancestors' legacy through personal research and encounters with those once intertwined with the Cartier family. Her diligent exploration unveils a tapestry of untold dramas, vibrant romances, intricate intrigues, and unexpected betrayals that transcended ordinary family business dynamics.

The narrative also grants a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into Cartier’s most illustrious creations, including the enigmatic Hope Diamond, the regal Romanov emeralds, and the timeless panther designs. These masterpieces adorned a constellation of high-profile clients ranging from Indian maharajas and Russian grand duchesses to icons like Wallis Simpson, Coco Chanel, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Celebrated by critics and readers alike, The Cartiers offers both a riveting biography and an opulent social history, drawing readers into the glamour and grandeur of a bygone era. The Economist praises it as a "dynamic group biography studded with design history and high-society dash," while Andre Leon Talley hails it as an "astounding" tale. In the words of the Wall Street Journal, “Ms. Cartier Brickell has done her grandfather proud,” encapsulating the spirit and legacy of the Cartier family.

Published in the bicentenary of founder Louis-François Cartier's birth, this definitive work serves as a homage to the enduring brilliance and innovativeness of one of the world's most prestigious jewellery houses, seen through the deeply personal lens of its storied lineage.
