Raising Demons

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
In the uproarious sequel to Life Among the Savages, the beloved author of The Haunting of Hill House confronts the most vexing demons yet—her own children. Shirley Jackson, with her trademark wit and uncanny precision, skewers the trials of domestic life in 1950s America. In Raising Demons, Jackson's four offspring have now grown into fully-fledged little devils, turning everyday family life into a whirlwind of chaotic yet endearing episodes. As the burgeoning Jackson family finds their modest home bursting at the seams, they manage—almost accidentally—to move into a larger residence. However, the promised serenity of a spacious abode quickly vanishes as the family's chaos tags along. From missing furniture to wandering children, misbehaving refrigerators, and an avalanche of books, the aforementioned demons ensure that pandemonium reigns supreme. Shirley Jackson masterfully navigates through the uproar, offering readers a candid and hilarious perspective on motherhood, domesticity, and the unpredictable dynamics of family life. Her insightful narrative transforms the mundane into a comic saga filled with delightful anecdotes and genuine warmth. Raising Demons is more than a memoir; it is a testament to the resilience, humour, and unwavering love that underpin family life, even in the face of endless turmoil. Jackson's ability to observe and describe the intricacies of her family's adventures makes this book an enduring classic that resonates with readers across generations. For anyone who has ever juggled the demands of home and family, or simply enjoys a well-told story of domestic comedy, Raising Demons is a must-read, offering a comforting reminder that even the most unsettling experiences can be met with laughter and grace.

About the Author

Shirley Jackson was born in California in 1916. When her short story, 'The Lottery', was first published in the New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird's Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, widely seen as her masterpiece. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died in 1965.
