Mortal Monarchs by Dr Suzie Edge delves into the enthralling yet macabre tales of how the monarchs of England and Scotland met their end across a millennium of tumultuous history. This riveting historical account explores the diverse and often gruesome ways in which these royal figures perished, encompassing violence, infections, overindulgence, and even the occasional act of regicide. Each monarch's demise is meticulously examined to uncover the plots, accusations, rivalries, and the ever-looming threat of poison that haunted the corridors of power.

The book presents a vivid tableau of royal deaths, from the notorious story behind Oliver Cromwell's bizarre post-mortem treatment to the contentious debate over whether the arrow that felled William II was an accident or an act of murder. The narrative further intrigues with the bizarre tales such as Henry IV's troubling skin condition and the infamous 'red-hot poker' incident of Edward II. Mortal Monarchs both captivates and educates, delivering historical facts with a touch of morbid curiosity and dark humour.

For many, school history lessons glossed over the specifics of how these rulers met their fate, focusing instead on their reigns and successors. However, this scholarly work enriches our understanding of history by shedding light on the varied and often gruesome ways monarchs have died, complemented by original medical research. This extensive study not only reveals how these individuals died but also reflects contemporary attitudes towards the human body, life, and death.

Beyond the enthralling historical narratives, this paperback edition includes additional material on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, providing an updated and comprehensive examination of royal mortality up to the modern age. Dr Suzie Edge's compelling and provocative analysis offers a unique perspective on the intersection of history and medicine, making Mortal Monarchs a must-read for history buffs and anyone fascinated by the darker aspects of royal heritage.
