What if things were ... otherwise?
cartographer: one that makes maps.
Every story in this year's Early Harvest anthology is a map to somewhere that doesn't quite exist.
This collection features impossible places, curious cartographies, and the very best stories dreamed up by young authors for an audience of their peers.
Young editors, mentored by bestselling author Hilary Badger and publishing industry professionals, have assembled a collection of worldbuilding tales over a yearlong writing project. The collection includes extraordinary stories, artwork and poems created by young Australian writers between the ages of 8 and 12, alongside a story by contributing guest author Hilary Badger.Β
PROGRAM DETAILS

About the Author
100 Story Building is Victoriaβs home of storymaking and creative discovery for children and young people. Our imagination-driven literacy programs empower children to take creative risks, embrace mistakes, follow their passions and experience the joy of expression.
100 Story Building books are edited by energetic and diverse panel of young people who participate in 100 Story Buildingβs annual Early Harvest publishing program.Β Each year, the editors at 100 Story Building create Australiaβs only fiction book that is written and edited by kids for kids. All stories, poems, and other content in the book have been carefully selected by 11- and 12-year-olds, who curate the collection based on the interests and sensibilities of their age group.
Hilary Badger: Contributing Guest Author
The daughter of two librarians, it makes complete sense that Hilary is now a childrenβs author, advertising creative leader and 100 Story Building board member. Words and creativity are a life-long passion.Β
Hilary is the founding author of the best-selling Zac Power series, which has been adapted for the screen and will debut in 2027. She also wrote theΒ Space Scout series, a young adult novel and a biography of cyclist Cadel Evans.Β
In her advertising career, Hilary leads the Melbourne office of global creative network, Leo. Over her 20+ years in the advertising industry, she has created iconic campaigns for brands like AAMI, Nintendo, Cadbury, BMW and Visit Victoria. The Department of Premier & Cabinetβs βDeadly Questionsβ campaign, which Hilary had the privilege of creating with Aboriginal Victorians, helped put Victoria on the path to a Treaty with its First People.Β
In a career highlight for any Melbourne writer, Hilaryβs story βThe Completely & Utterly Absolutely Perfect Christmasβ was commissioned by Myer and featured in the iconic Christmas windows.Β
Hilary's advertising industry writing has featured inΒ The AustralianΒ and regularly in trade publications like Little Black BookΒ and Campaign Asia. Hilary is a committee member of the Australian Writers & Art Directorsβ Association, where she lectures and mentors early career-stage creatives. Recently, Hilary judged AWARD Lab, a generative AI sprint competition in conjunction with Leonardo.ai, which explored how AI tools can serve human creativity in response to a live brief.
