Civilization and Its Discontents: Popular Penguins
In his final years, Freud devoted most of his energies to a series of highly ambitious works on the broadest issues of religion and society. Here, he argues that civilised values - and the impossible ideals of Christianity - inevitably distort our natural aggression and impose a terrible burden of guilt.

DescriptionIn Civilization and Its Discontents: Popular Penguins, Sigmund Freud embarks on an exploration of the fundamental tensions that exist between the individual and the demands of society. Written during his later years, Freud delves deep into the psychological underpinnings that foster the complex relationship between our innate desires and the constraints imposed by cultural norms. This profound investigation is not just an analysis of societal structures but also an introspective journey into the human psyche, revealing our intrinsic conflicts and the emotional toll they take on our well-being.
The book addresses some of the most pressing questions about human nature: Why do people experience so much dissatisfaction despite societal advancements? How do collective norms and religious doctrines shape our behaviour and create inner turmoil? Freud asserts that civilization, with its high ideals and moral expectations, forces individuals to suppress their natural instincts, causing a perpetual state of internal conflict and a burden of guilt. This repression is particularly evident in the context of Christian values, which Freud claims contribute to an unrealistic standard of selflessness and virtue.
Freud draws upon his vast knowledge of psychoanalysis to explain that this suppression of our primal urges leads to a discontent that seeps into the fabric of our everyday lives. According to him, the very progress of civilization necessitates this repression, making the pursuit of true happiness a fleeting and elusive endeavour. He postulates that our aggression is an inherent part of our nature and that society's attempt to curb it only intensifies our feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction.
Through a combination of psychoanalytic theory, cultural observation, and keen philosophical insight, Freud delves into the costs of living within a civilized society. His discussion extends to various aspects of human experience, including love, work, aggression, and the quest for purpose and meaning. Civilization and Its Discontents provides a thought-provoking critique that challenges readers to contemplate the price of cultural conformity and the inherent struggles that come with the human condition.
This seminal work is essential reading for anyone interested in psychology, sociology, or philosophy. It offers valuable insights into the enduring tensions that define human existence and the complexities of maintaining a balance between personal desires and societal expectations. Freud's penetrating analysis continues to resonate, inviting readers to reflect on the implications of civilization on our mental and emotional health.

About the Author
Date- 2004-09-22 Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was born in Moravia; between the ages of four and eighty-two his home was in Vienna- in 1938 Hitler's invasion of Austria forced him to seek asylum in London, where he died in the following year. His career began with several years of brilliant work on the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. He was almost thirty when, after a period of study under Charcot in Paris, his interests first turned to psychology, and another ten years of clinical work in Vienna (at first in collaboration with Breuer, an older colleague) saw the birth of his creation, psychoanalysis. Freud's life was uneventful, but his ideas have shaped not only many specialist disciplines, but the whole intellectual climate of the twentieth century. He was almost thirty when, after a period of study under Charcot in Paris, his interests first turned to psychology, and another ten years of clinical work in Vienna (at first in collaboration with Breuer, an older colleague) saw the birth of his creation, psychoanalysis. This began simply as a method of treating neurotic patients by investigating their minds, but it quickly grew into an accumulation of knowledge about the workings of the mind in general, whether sick or healthy. Freud was thus able to demonstrate the normal development of the sexual instinct in childhood and, largely on the basis of an examination of dreams, arrived at his fundamental discovery of the unconscious forces that influence our everyday thoughts and actions. Freud's life was uneventful, but his ideas have shaped not only many specialist disciplines, but the whole intellectual climate of the last half-century.
