On the Origin of Species

Before the "Origin of Species", accepted thinking held that life was the static and perfect creation of God. By a single, systematic argument Darwin called this view into question. This edition includes brief biographies of some of the most important scientific thinkers leading up to and surrounding the "Origin of Species".

The anniversary paperback edition of On the Origin of Species, edited by Professor William Bynum, presents Charles Darwin's groundbreaking work on evolutionary biology with a fresh introduction and scholarly references by Bynum. Designed with a striking cover by Damien Hirst, this edition replaces the earlier 1968 version and brings Darwin's seminal text into closer dialogue with contemporary readers.

Originally published in 1859, On the Origin of Species explores the theory of natural selection, detailing how species evolve over generations through a process of inherited traits that enhance survival and reproduction. Darwin's meticulous observations and compelling arguments challenge the prevailing views of the time by proposing that species are not static but constantly changing in response to their environments. His work delves into the intricate relationships between organisms and their ecosystems, highlighting the delicate balance of nature.

As one of the most influential texts in the history of science, On the Origin of Species had a profound impact on both the scientific community and the general public. Darwin's theories revolutionised our understanding of life on Earth, providing a new framework for exploring the diversity of species. Despite initial resistance, the ideas presented laid the foundation for modern evolutionary biology and continue to inspire and provoke thought and debate well into the 21st century.

Darwin wrote his book in an accessible manner, ensuring that even readers without a scientific background could grasp the revolutionary concepts he presented. The anniversary edition enhances this accessibility with an insightful introduction by William Bynum, who places Darwin's work within its historical and scientific context, and provides additional scholarly references to aid in deeper understanding.

This edition is a must-have for anyone interested in the natural sciences, the history of scientific thought, or the philosophical implications of evolution. The inclusion of contemporary design elements by Damien Hirst adds a modern touch, making it a valuable collector's item as well as a timeless source of knowledge. Discover why On the Origin of Species remains an essential read for those seeking to understand the complexities of life and the ongoing processes that shape our world.

About the Author

Charles Darwin (Author) Charles Darwin, a Victorian scientist and naturalist, has become one of the most famous figures of science to date. Born in 1809 to an upper-middle-class medical family, he was destined for a career in either medicine or the Anglican Church. However, he never completed his medical education and his future changed entirely in 1831 when he joined HMS Beagle as a self-financing, independent naturalist. On returning to England in 1836 he began to write up his theories and observations which culminated in a series of books, most famously On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859, where he challenged and contradicted contemporary biological and religious beliefs with two decades worth of scientific investigation and theory. Darwin's theory of natural selection is now the most widely accepted scientific model of how species evolve. He died in 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. William Bynum (External Editor, Introducer) William Bynum is Professor Emeritus of the History of Medicine at University College, London, and was for many years Head of the Academic Unit of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. He edited the scholarly journal Medical History from 1980 to 2001, and his previous publications include Science and the Practice of Medicine in the Nineteenth Century; The Companion Encyclopedia of the History of Medicine (co-edited with Roy Porter); The Oxford Dictionary of Scientific Quotations (with Roy Porter), The Dictionary of Medical Biography (with Helen Bynum), and History of Medicine- A Very Short Introduction. He lives in Suffolk.
