Immerse yourself in the profound wisdom of the Māori with Mauri Ora by Peter Alsop and Te Raumawhitu Kupenga. This enlightening book presents a collection of whakataukī—Māori proverbs—each brimming with timeless insights and cultural heritage passed down through generations. As you journey through its pages, you will discover how these succinct metaphors encapsulate deep thoughts and values with a remarkable economy of words, often surprising the reader and prompting reflection, learning, and personal growth.

Mauri Ora links these traditional proverbs to universal virtues such as wisdom, courage, compassion, integrity, self-mastery, and belief. These virtues, which resonate across cultures and eras, are rooted in the principles of positive psychology—the scientific study of what makes life most worth living. The book aims to provide a recipe for personal effectiveness and leadership, seamlessly bridging the time-honoured knowledge of Māori culture with contemporary thinking on happiness and fulfilment.

Beautifully illustrated with captivating photographs from the Māori world, Mauri Ora brings to life the historical and cultural context of the proverbs. These images not only complement the text but also provide a visual journey into an ancient heritage, enhancing the reader's understanding and appreciation of the wisdom contained within the whakataukī.

Perfect for seekers of personal development, educators, leaders, and anyone interested in Māori culture, Mauri Ora offers a uniquely enriching experience. It inspires readers to reflect on their own lives and practices, harnessing the power of cultural wisdom to cultivate virtues that lead to a more fulfilling and effective way of living.

Engage with the powerful messages in Mauri Ora and allow the perennial wisdom of the Māori to guide you towards personal excellence and deeper connections with yourself and others.

About the Author

PETER ALSOP grew up in Rotorua with a curiosity about te ao Maori, the Maori world. His work in Wellington, across the public and private sectors, included meeting his Ng-aati Porou wife, Airihi Mahuika, daughter of Poihipi/Bussy (1925-2004). Being married by Bussy's younger brother Api (1934-2015), in Tikitiki's St Mary's Church (itself a tribute to Apirana Ngata) was a very special event. Hearing Api's beautiful public oratory also built life-changing memories and a spirited call for a meaningful contribution to the greater good. With four young kids and a senior executive role, Peter somehow finds time as a night-time author to pursue his creative dreams. This is his sixth book celebrating important cultural legacies of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Peter also exhibited a collection of whakatauk- I/proverb paintings in 2006. TE RAUMAWHITU KUPENGA, Te Rau, belongs to Ng- ati Porou, from the East Coast of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Te Rau received a privileged upbringing by his mother and his mother's kin, who fostered in him a lifelong passion for tribal cultural knowledge. Having enjoyed a career in the law, as well as holding senior positions in the private and public sectors, Te Rau's key focus these days is on tribal development. His favourite pastime is spending time with his three children and fostering in them a love of their cultural heritage.
