Bloody Minded
Bloody Minded unfolds the remarkable journey of Susie Ferguson, an esteemed RNZ presenter who started her career amidst the chaos of war zones. With a helmet on her head and a flak jacket on her back, she was one of the boys among hundreds of soldiers, steering through the perils of conflict. However, beneath her brave facade was a hidden struggle, as she relied on fifteen painkillers a day and opioids to combat the relentless pain in her uterus. This gripping memoir delves into the trials and tribulations of womanhood, exploring both physical and emotional hardships that come with it.
Susie’s journey transcends mere physical pain, tackling the excruciating experiences that only women can understand. It explores the brutal bullying from other girls, the frustration of waiting for surgery because her pain was dismissed, and the omnipresent threat of violence in regions where women are mere property or war trophies. The narrative takes an intimate look at the transformative transition from a high-powered career to being a stay-at-home mum and the condescending healthcare professionals who belittled her suffering.
But Bloody Minded is also a testament to resilience. It celebrates friendship, love, and the strength to persevere amidst adversity. Despite the multifaceted obstacles, Susie emerges with an indomitable spirit, proving that smiling through the pain is a victory in itself.
