In this thought-provoking book, Friedman argues that competitive capitalism is not merely a tool for achieving economic prosperity but is also an indispensable foundation for sustaining individual liberty. Through a series of compelling essays, Friedman expounds on how market mechanisms can coordinate economic activity with remarkable efficiency while preserving personal freedoms. He delves into the role of government in a free society, advocating for minimal intervention and highlighting how excessive control can stifle both progress and liberty. This classic treatise presents a persuasive vision of how freedom and capitalism are inextricably linked.

Since its initial publication in 1962, Capitalism and Freedom has been acknowledged as one of the most influential economic books of the 20th century. Endorsed and celebrated worldwide, the book has been translated into eighteen languages and has sold nearly one million copies. Friedman's lucid articulation of his economic philosophy has resonated with academics, policymakers, and general readers alike, sparking debates and reshaping economic discourse. This work offers not only a critique of prevalent systems but also practical policy proposals geared towards diminishing government control and expanding market freedoms.

This edition of Capitalism and Freedom includes insightful prefaces by Friedman from the 1982 and 2002 reissues, which contextualise the book’s enduring relevance across different decades. Moreover, it features a new foreword by Binyamin Appelbaum, an esteemed economics writer for the New York Times editorial board, offering modern reflections on Friedman's ideas. The book's influence is underscored by its inclusion in multiple prestigious lists, such as TIME magazine’s All-TIME 100 Best Nonfiction Books, Times Literary Supplement’s 100 Most Influential Books Since the War, National Review’s 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Century, and Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s 50 Best Books of the 20th Century.
