Heart of Darkness

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY TIM BUTCHER

The silence of the jungle is broken only by the ominous sound of drumming. But his decision to hunt down the mysterious Mr Kurtz, an ivory trader who is the subject of sinister rumours, leads him into more than just physical peril.

He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision - he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath, "The horror! The horror!"' - Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is an enthralling and thought-provoking exploration of civilisation and savagery, challenging the very essence of our humanity. As Marlow, a seafaring wanderer, recounts his harrowing expedition into the African Congo, readers are whisked through rivers choked with danger and into the unknown depths of an unforgiving jungle. His assignment, to captain a steamer upriver, brings him face-to-face with the unknown and unfathomable forces lurking in the underbrush.

Throughout his journey, Marlow's pursuit of the enigmatic ivory trader, Mr Kurtz, sets off a cascade of startling revelations. Kurtz is a man about whom sinister and compelling stories abound, a figure whose presence exerts an almost supernatural influence over those around him. As the steamer pushes deeper into the heart of the continent, Marlow’s plight transforms from a mission of mere navigation to an allegorical voyage into the darkest recesses of human nature itself.

The silence of the jungle is ominously broken only by the distant rhythm of drumming, embodying the palpable tension and unspoken threats. Life on the river is not merely a test of physical endurance, but a psychological odyssey where the veneer of civilisation is stripped away, revealing the raw and primal instincts lurking beneath.

With an introduction by Tim Butcher, this edition of Heart of Darkness enriches the reader’s understanding with insightful perspectives that intertwine historical context and literary critique. The evocative narrative not only mirrors the perils faced by nineteenth-century explorers but also serves as a timeless reflection on the shadows residing within us all.

Heart of Darkness remains a compelling and influential work of English literature, engaging readers with its haunting and nuanced portrayal of imperialism, morality, and the complexities of human consciousness.

"One of the most compelling and influential works of English literature in the last century" - Independent
