We Are Here: Talking with Australia's Oldest Holocaust Survivors brings forth the voices of the last adult witnesses, sharing their stories in their own words.

When Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, he swiftly set out to realise his vision of a racially superior nation, free of 'inferior' groups. His horrific goal included the eradication of European Jewry, a plan that ultimately claimed six million lives. By 1945, nearly two in three European Jews had perished, along with millions of other victims of Nazism.

For those who survived, liberation brought the overwhelming burden of guilt and memory as they embarked on the next chapter of their lives, often settling in distant lands like Australia. Here, one of the world's highest per capita communities of Holocaust survivors would form.

Now, the last of these adult survivors have reached ages once deemed unattainable. They endured the horrors of Nazism and today, in their tenth and eleventh decades, have outlived most of their contemporaries. In this book, eighteen Australians from across Europe share what it was like to live through those years and beyond.
