Waterloo by Bernard Cornwell breathes life into one of the most pivotal battles in European history. Set against the backdrop of a quiet valley south of Brussels, the narrative unfolds on the 18th of June, 1815, when the armies of France, Britain, and Prussia converge for a showdown that will alter the course of the continent. The preceding days saw the French army claim victories at Quatre-Bras and Ligny, forcing the Allies into a desperate retreat.

This blood-soaked conflict culminates in the legendary Battle of Waterloo, a clash whose outcome would shape the future of Europe. Cornwell meticulously details the four days leading up to this cataclysmic event, offering readers an hour-by-hour account of the fateful day, illustrating how close the French forces came to triumphing until the tide turned in the evening hours.

In his first foray into non-fiction, Bernard Cornwell weaves his masterful storytelling with rigorous historical research. He provides a gripping, vivid portrayal of the battlefield's chaos, from the smoke and bloodshed to the strategic manoeuvres and desperate struggles. Through the lens of letters and diaries, Cornwell delves into the minds of key figures like Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington, along with the thoughts and feelings of ordinary officers and soldiers.

Published to coincide with the bicentenary of the battle in 2015, Waterloo is more than a historical account; it is a story of heroism, tragedy, and the dramatic final battle that determined the fate of Europe. Cornwell's narrative skill and comprehensive research combine to offer an enthralling and unforgettable read, bringing history alive for a new generation of readers.
