After the Tampa is a gripping memoir by Abbas Nazari, chronicling his family's extraordinary journey from the gripping terror of Taliban-dominated Afghanistan to the welcoming shores of New Zealand. The narrative begins in 2001, when the Taliban were at the peak of their power, leaving Abbas's parents with no choice but to find safety for their young children away from their besieged homeland.

Their quest for security propels them on a treacherous voyage that spans continents. From the rugged peaks of Afghanistan to the expansive waters of the Indian Ocean, their resolve is continually tested. They eventually find themselves aboard a crowded fishing vessel alongside more than 400 other desperate asylum seekers, all clinging to the hope of a better future.

Tragedy strikes when their decrepit boat begins to sink. In a desperate turn of events, they are miraculously rescued by the cargo ship Tampa, marking one of the most significant maritime rescues in recent history. Yet, their ordeal is far from over. Australia, embroiled in its national election, enforces a stringent policy of offshore detention, closing its doors to these asylum seekers and sparking international controversy. Amid heated political debates, many of those rescued are transported to the island of Nauru.

Amidst this chaos, Abbas Nazari's family is amongst the fortunate few selected for resettlement in New Zealand. More than twenty years after the Tampa incident, Abbas recounts his remarkable story. From the oppressive rule of the Taliban and a harrowing month at sea to the challenges and triumphs of starting anew in a distant land, Abbas presents a vivid and inspiring tale.

After the Tampa is not just a memoir but a poignant reminder of the indomitable human spirit and the unyielding pursuit of hope. Abbas's story stands as a testament to endurance, perseverance, and the enduring belief in a brighter future, no matter how daunting the journey.

Critical Acclaim:

'An astonishing story of endurance and triumph.' - Sydney Morning Herald

'After the Tampa tells the heart-breaking, life-affirming, heroic, remarkable story of fleeing the Taliban. A stunning book, beautifully, gently written, unflinching but also full of compassion and hope. This is a beautiful book.' - John Campbell, Breakfast 1

Through eloquent prose and compelling storytelling, Abbas Nazari opens a window to the struggles and hopes of refugees worldwide, making After the Tampa a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities and triumphs of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
