Grit
Grit by Angela Duckworth is an eye-opening exploration into the true driving factors behind success. This Vermilion Life Essentials edition brings Duckworth’s breakthrough research to a wider audience, making it accessible to smart-thinking readers everywhere. With a compelling new chapter from the author, this edition goes even deeper into the essence of perseverance and passion.
The book delves into the curious phenomenon of why naturally talented individuals often fail to achieve their potential while others, seemingly less gifted, accomplish incredible feats. Duckworth reveals that the key to outstanding achievement isn’t talent but a unique blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.”
Duckworth, a MacArthur Genius Award-winning psychologist, presents her groundbreaking findings on what it truly takes to succeed. Drawing upon data from interviews, case studies, and rigorous scientific research, she debunks the myth that innate talent is the most critical factor for success. Instead, she highlights the importance of gritty perseverance and introduces a Grit Formula to help readers cultivate their grit. This formula is centred around six pivotal factors: hope, effort, precision, passion, ritual, and prioritisation.
Through this compelling narrative, you will discover:
- Why individuals who score high in talent assessments often fall short of their potential, and conversely, why those who score lower often exceed expectations.
- How grit can be developed regardless of your IQ or background.
- The crucial role of stubbornness in the makeup of gritty individuals.
- The discerning approach to knowing when to hold on and when letting go is the grittiest choice you can make.
- Methods that gritty people use to find and follow their passions, which you can apply to unearth and pursue yours.
- Effective practices employed by gritty experts and how you can integrate these practices into your daily life.
- Ways in which those who care about you can support and enhance your grit during challenging times.
- How high-performing sports teams, companies, and educational institutions foster a culture of grit among their members.
Grit surpasses clichéd notions such as “success is all about hard work” by offering a profound and motivating perspective that empowers readers to achieve far beyond what natural talent alone might predict. This inspiring guide is a must-read for anyone eager to unlock their fullest potential and climb to new heights through the power of grit.

About the Author
Dr Angela Duckworth is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and an associate professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is an expert in non-IQ competencies, including grit and self-control. A highly sought-after international speaker, her TED talk on grit has been viewed by over 10 million people. Duckworth's hypothesis that the real guarantor of success may not be inborn talent but a special blend of resilience and single-mindedness grew out of her upbringing- as a child her scientist father lovingly bemoaned the fact his daughter was 'no genius'. Duckworth was determined to prove him wrong and spent her youth smashing through every academic barrier. As an adult she became focused on proving her theory and to find out if grit can be learned or cultivated. It was out of this that she created her own Character Lab at the University of Pennsylvania.
