All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a breathtaking novel that intricately weaves together the lives of a blind French girl and a German boy during the tumultuous times of World War II. Through rich and descriptive prose, Doerr paints a hauntingly beautiful portrait of a world faced with darkness and destruction, yet brimming with moments of light and hope.

The story centres on Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a young girl who has been blind since the age of six. Her father, a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, creates intricate miniature models of their neighbourhood to help her navigate the world. When the Nazis occupy Paris, they are forced to flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, carrying with them an invaluable diamond, the "Sea of Flames," that her father has been entrusted to protect.

Parallel to Marie-Laure's story is that of Werner Pfennig, a German orphan with a gift for engineering. His talent with radios leads him to the attention of the Hitler Youth Academy, where he is trained and eventually sent out into the war to locate resistance activities. Werner's journey takes him across the devastated landscapes of Europe, bringing him closer to an intersection with Marie-Laure's life.

As the war progresses, the novel delves into the contrasting yet intertwined lives of these two protagonists. Through the vivid depiction of their struggles and triumphs, Doerr explores themes of resilience, kindness, and the unseen connections that bind humanity together. Both characters are bound by their quest for survival, their love for knowledge, and their hope for a better future amidst the chaos surrounding them.

Winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, All the Light We Cannot See also secured its place as a finalist for the National Book Award and received the Carnegie Medal for Fiction. This critically acclaimed bestseller is celebrated for its stunning ambition, meticulous research, and emotional depth. Anthony Doerr constructs a narrative that is not only a wartime epic but also a testimony to the power of human connection and the ways, against all odds, people strive to bring light into each other's lives.
