Peak by Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool is an enlightening exploration into the science of expertise and human potential. The book delves into the fascinating research that reveals how ordinary people can achieve extraordinary levels of performance through specific kinds of practice and training. By analysing the key techniques used by chess champions, elite athletes, gifted musicians, and memory experts, the authors break down the mythology of innate talent and replace it with a foundational understanding of how skills are learned and mastered.

With meticulous research and compelling case studies, Peak distils three decades of myth-shattering studies into powerful learning strategies that diverge significantly from traditional methods of acquiring new skills. This comprehensive guide offers practical advice on how to enhance performance in various domains, whether it's at work, in sports, in music, or in academic endeavours. The strategies presented within the book demonstrate that with targeted practice and the right techniques, anyone can excel at their chosen activities without needing to be a natural-born genius.

Anders Ericsson, renowned for his extensive work on the science of expertise, has spent a significant part of his career understanding what makes top performers excel. His findings, accumulated over the years, culminate in this remarkable book that provides readers with the tools needed to achieve their personal best. Ericsson's revolutionary methods reveal that with deliberate practice and the application of specific techniques, improvements in skill and performance are not just possible but inevitable.

Peak has received praise from a number of notable figures, with Fortune stating, “Anyone who wants to get better at anything should read Peak.” Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics, describes it as “Remarkable...who among us doesn't want to learn how to get better at life?” Joshua Foer, the author of Moonwalking with Einstein, adds, "This book...could truly change the world."

Whether you aspire to be exceptional in your profession, enhance your athletic prowess, master a musical instrument, or support your child's educational advancements, Peak offers a proven roadmap to unlocking your potential. It turns the traditional understanding of talent on its head and presents a transformative approach to mastering any skill that is important to you.

About the Author

Anders Ericsson (Author) Professor Anders Ericsson is the world's reigning expert on expertise. His research into what makes ordinary people achieve the extraordinary was the inspiration for the 10,000-hours rule - the popular theory that 10,000 hours of any type of practice will allow an individual to excel in any field. In this book, he describes how a particular type of extended practice leads to exceptional performance. Anders Ericsson began his research into expertise when he conducted a memory trial on a young man. Despite having no previous aptitude for memory exercises, after several hundred sessions the young man was displaying memory powers over 10 times that of an average person. This was as a result of the system of training Ericsson had put him through - a process Ericsson has named 'deliberate practice'. Professor Ericsson has gone on to have his research widely cited in major newspapers and magazines worldwide, and he has worked with major international organisations, as well as Oxford, Stanford and Harvard medical schools, teachers and educational researchers, professional sports teams (Manchester City Football Club, Saracens Rugby Union Club, UK Sport, England and Wales Cricket Board), and military groups. Robert Pool (Author) Robert Pool is a science writer who has worked at some of the world's most prestigious science publications, including Science and Nature, and his writing has appeared in many others. He is the author of three previous books.
