Sociopath: A Memoir
An utterly compelling, drily funny, and, at times, jaw-dropping account of life as a diagnosed sociopath from a music manager who retrained as a therapist to better understand her condition, and help other sociopaths.

DescriptionSociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne takes readers on an illuminating and unflinchingly honest journey through the mind of a woman grappling with her identity as a sociopath. From an early age, Patric sensed she was different from those around her. While her peers expressed feelings of guilt and remorse, she felt only apathy and frustration. Despite the love she felt for her close-knit family and her best friend, David, these connections were insufficient to deter her from heading down a path of increasingly dangerous behaviour.
Patric’s childhood misadventures began with petty theft, but as she grew older, her actions escalated to breaking and entering, stalking, and more severe offences. It wasn’t until her adult years that she discovered the term that defined her condition: sociopathy. Yet, the clinical descriptions of sociopathy didn’t capture the full breadth of her experience. She had goals, meaningful relationships, and a desire—albeit conflicted—to live a life free from harm.
This memoir delves deeply into Patric’s internal struggle as she navigates the precarious balance between her darker urges and her aspiration to lead a loving and productive life. Her relationship with her partner becomes a focal point in this battle, as she contemplates whether it’s possible for a sociopath to integrate happily into society. The stakes grow ever higher as she searches for answers and faces the real possibility that one day, her behaviour might spiral beyond her control.
Sociopath: A Memoir is not just a gripping narrative of a life lived on the edge but also a redemptive love story and a poignant exploration of a woman’s fight for understanding and acceptance. Patric’s story sheds light on the complexities of human nature and challenges readers to reconsider their preconceptions about sociopathy. Can someone who is inherently different find a place in a world that often demands conformity? Patric’s quest for self-acceptance and her efforts to navigate her condition provide a thought-provoking read that resonates long after the final page is turned.

About the Author
Patric Gagne is a writer, therapist, and advocate for people suffering from sociopathic, psychopathic, and anti-social personality disorders. She earned a PhD in clinical psychology with a dissertation that examined the relationship between sociopathy and anxiety. This research became the groundwork for her continued studies on sociopathic disorder, as well as the foundation for her memoir. When she is not working with patients or running after her small children, Patric volunteers as a grief counselor specializing in violent crime.
