Key to Yellow Workbook
The Key to Yellow Workbook gives clear, thoroughly-explained answers to all exercises in the Yellow Workbook, one of four non-sequential workbooks in the Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind series, providing detailed, well-designed exercises in the correct use of English grammar for middle-school and high-school level students, as well as grammar aficionados of any age.
The Key to Yellow Workbook provides clear, thoroughly explained answers to all exercises in the Yellow Workbook, one of four non-sequential books in the Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind series. These books offer detailed and well-designed exercises in the correct use of English grammar.
The Key, along with the accompanying Yellow Workbook and the Core Instructor Text, forms part of Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind: a comprehensive course guiding students from basic definitions (such as "A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea") to advanced sentence structure and analysis. It encompasses all the grammar skills necessary to write and speak with eloquence and confidence.
This innovative program combines three essential elements of language learning: the understanding and memorizing of rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of rule usage (descriptive instruction), and practice using these rules in exercises and writing (practical experience).
Each year, parents and teachers go over the dialogue, rules, and examples in the Core Instructor Text, while students follow along in the Workbook. This repetition solidifies the concepts, definitions, and examples in the student's mind. There are four Workbooks, one for each year, each including the same rules and examples but featuring four entirely different sets of exercises and assignments. This setup allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of how the rules and examples are applied in writing.
Each Key to the Workbooks offers not only answers but also explanations for the parent or instructor. It provides guidance for cases when answers might be ambiguous, as English often is. All the rules, along with repeated examples, are assembled for ongoing reference in The Grammar Guidebook. Every step of the sentence diagramming process is collected for reference, along with illustrations, in The Diagramming Dictionary. These resources become indispensable guides for writing through high school, into college, and beyond.
Step-by-step instruction takes students from basic concepts through advanced grammar topics, such as modal and hortative verbs and multiple functions of noun clauses. Extensive diagramming exercises reinforce the rules, aiding technical and visual learners in understanding and using the English language effectively. Each step of the diagramming process is illustrated and thoroughly explained to the students.
Texts for examples and exercises are drawn from significant works of literature and well-written nonfiction texts in science, mathematics, and the social sciences. Regular reviews are built into each year of work. The Key accompanies one of four non-sequential Workbooks, each containing new exercises that allow students to practice and apply the grammar principles under study.

She's a self-proclaimed grammar nerd, and believes that the phrase "knowledge is power" applies to the mechanics of grammar and writing. Patty Rebne grew up in Colorado, where she earned a BA and an MBA. Most of her grammar, she learned from her mother, an award-winning journalist. To earn a living, Patty taught high school, delivered packages for UPS, marketed and sold software as a Senior Product Marketing Manager at Microsoft, inscribed Christmas cards, and wrote fortune-cookie fortunes. She and her husband Glenn live near Seattle; they have a grown son who was mostly homeschooled, guided by The Well Trained Mind with generous additions of ski days and road-trips. Patty likes the physical action of handwriting, and does photography and cross stitch in her ample spare time.
