Inflamed

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
Inflamed by Raj Patel and Rupa Marya delves into the intricate interplay between our body's biological systems and the social, political, and environmental factors affecting them. The book uncovers the hidden connections that link physical inflammation to global injustices, highlighting how our health cannot be viewed in isolation from the wider world.

The authors take readers on a remarkable journey through the human body's diverse systems: digestive, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, immune, and nervous. Each chapter illuminates the profound ways these systems interact with external factors such as the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the societal traumas we endure. Inflamed elucidates how these connections reveal deeper truths about our health and wellbeing.

This text goes beyond mere examination of the physical; it delves into the emotional and psychological realms, discussing how the stories we tell and the diagnoses from our healthcare systems contribute to a widespread state of inflammation. The authors argue that our existing medical practices often fail to address the root causes of these issues, exacerbating inequalities and suffering.

What sets Inflamed apart is its blend of high-quality scholarship with poignant narratives from patients in marginalised communities and the wisdom of Indigenous sciences. Through this multifaceted approach, Patel and Marya advocate for a "deep medicine"—a holistic view that seeks to heal not just individual bodies but also the social and ecological systems we depend on. By linking personal health to global wellbeing, the book offers a revolutionary perspective that challenges conventional Western medicine.

Naomi Klein, author of On Fire, praises the book as "a work of exhilarating scope and relevance... a rare and powerful experience." Inflamed urges us to reconsider our approach to health, making it a crucial read for anyone interested in the intersections of medicine, social justice, and environmental health.
