An engrossing thriller. Imogen, a former journalist, is bewildered when a mysterious stranger says her grandfather in New Zealand needs help. DescriptionSecrets of the Land by Kate Mahony tells the intriguing story of Imogen Maguire, who, in 2018, is bewildered when accosted in a Melbourne street by a mysterious stranger claiming her grandfather in New Zealand needs her help. But isn't her grandfather dead?
A former journalist, Imogen decides to investigate and travels to Taranaki, where she discovers her grandfather is very much alive. Someone is attempting to scare the elderly man off his farm.
A long shadow hangs over her grandfather's land, stretching from 1864, when two young Irishmen joined the British army in its fight against the Taranaki Māori, to 1975 when Imogen's grandparents arrived, fleeing trouble in Ireland.
Their daughter, Aoife, Imogen's mother, despises the new country her parents have brought her to, yet she knows returning to Ireland is impossible. The Irishman she encounters, sheltering in a hedge, is as lost as she is.
