Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a riveting tale of survival, societal breakdown, and the darkness within human nature. Set on a deserted island, the novel follows a group of boys stranded after a plane crash. As they attempt to govern themselves, their makeshift society gradually descends into chaos and savagery. Through powerful, symbolic storytelling, Golding masterfully explores the fragile veneer of civilisation and the inherent potential for brutality within us all.

This timeless novel has captivated readers and schoolchildren ever since its first publication in 1954. As a former schoolteacher, Golding had a keen understanding of what excites and interests young readers. The book is not only a gripping narrative with well-drawn characters but also a profound exploration of human nature and moral dilemmas.

Part of the enduring appeal of Lord of the Flies, particularly in educational settings, lies in its exploration of universal themes and issues. The novel prompts thought-provoking discussions and analyses about the capabilities for good and evil within humanity, the fragility of moral inhibition, and beyond. The boys' struggle to establish a functioning community without preset boundaries serves as an invitation for readers to ponder the complexities of social and political constructs and moral frameworks.

Throughout the text, ideas of community, leadership, and the rule of law are scrutinised, compelling readers to consider who should hold power, the basis of such authority, and the repercussions of power acquisition. These themes remain relevant today and can be effortlessly translated into teaching and learning contexts through meaningful classroom discussions and projects.

This new educational edition of Lord of the Flies is designed to foster independent and original thought among students. It includes a comprehensive introduction with a biographical section about William Golding and background information on the novel's historical context, making it ideal for students preparing for GCSE and A-Level courses. Additionally, the text is supplemented with chapter summaries, comprehension questions, discussion points, activities, and a glossary of less familiar terms and phrases.

This edition also features William Golding's essay on Lord of the Flies, titled 'Fable'. These resources aim to inspire creative teaching, nurture a deep appreciation of the novel, and stimulate an enduring love for literature in readers.
