In Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey, humanity has spread across the solar system, establishing colonies on numerous planets and moons. These settlements form a dense network, with Earth, Mars, and the resource-rich Belt as key locations. While interstellar travel remains an unattainable dream, the solar system is a bustling hub of human activity. Despite this interconnectedness, deep-seated tensions simmer beneath the surface. The outer planets, rich in minerals but reliant on Earth and Mars for resources and protection, harbour resentment towards the political and military dominance exerted by the inner planets.

The story centres on Captain Jim Holden, an officer aboard an ice hauler operating in the outer regions of the solar system. His life takes a dramatic turn when his crew stumbles upon a derelict and abandoned ship. What initially seems like a routine salvage operation quickly spirals into a dangerous conspiracy. The discovery leads to a deadly attack by a stealth ship from Mars, and Holden finds himself at the epicentre of a system-wide conflict.

As tensions escalate, Holden, joined by a ragtag group of survivors, must navigate through treacherous political landscapes and hidden agendas. They are tasked with uncovering the motives behind the alarming attack and must piece together a mystery that could ignite a catastrophic war across the solar system. Complicating matters further is the enigmatic and deadly protomolecule, an alien technology that poses a dire threat to all human life.

Simultaneously, the narrative introduces Detective Miller, a jaded cop on Ceres Station, who is tasked with finding a missing woman named Julie Mao. His investigation intersects with Holden's plight, and together, they delve deeper into a mystery that reveals devastating truths about the forces at play.

Leviathan Wakes blends elements of hard science fiction with a captivating detective noir storyline, presenting a richly detailed and expansive universe. The novel explores themes of survival, power, and the far-reaching consequences of human ambition. With its intricate plot, multifaceted characters, and thought-provoking ideas, Leviathan Wakes is a thrilling beginning to The Expanse series, setting the stage for an epic saga that examines humanity's place in the cosmos.

Perfect for fans of space opera and science fiction enthusiasts, this gripping novel promises to keep readers on the edge of their seats, eager to uncover the next twist in its multifaceted tale.

Most accurate and plausible physics of any sci-fi

With vivid detail, the Expanse universe is introduced and immediately feels real and obvious.

Grounded in realistic physics and a thrilling ethnopolitical setup every part of this book (and series) feels real and thought out. Fantastic read and a great TV series too.
