A Short History of Russia
A Short History of Russia by Mark Galeotti is an indispensable guide through the labyrinth of Russian history, masterfully condensed by an expert in the field. This book takes readers on an exhilarating journey from the enigmatic reign of Ivan the Terrible and the grandeur of Catherine the Great, through the seismic shifts of the Russian Revolution and the disintegration of the USSR, culminating in the contemporary drama of Vladimir Putin's rise to power and the complex path leading to the Ukrainian conflict.
Through Galeotti's astute and insightful narrative, readers are invited to delve into the heart of a nation that defies simple categorisation. With no clear geographic or cultural boundaries and a multifaceted identity, Russia stands as a formidable player on the global stage, both enigmatic and influential. It is a land of poets and revolutionaries, war and peace, offering a rich tapestry of events that have shaped the world.
This essential whistle-stop tour of Russia not only unpacks the myths surrounding its history but also provides a nuanced understanding of its people and its place in world affairs. From the establishment of the nation and its early legendary figures to the eventual rise and demise of the Romanov dynasty, Galeotti expertly navigates the tumultuous 20th century—highlighting the Russian Revolution, the Cold War, and the catastrophic Chernobyl disaster—before bringing the story into the modern era with an eye on Putin's intriguing political journey.
The Financial Times commends Galeotti as "one of the most astute political commentators on Putin and modern Russia," while historian Peter Frankopan lauds the book as "an amazing achievement." These endorsements underscore the authoritative and engaging nature of Galeotti's work.
Can anyone truly understand Russia? This deeply compelling and accessible history offers a profound exploration for those who seek to grasp the complexities and enduring mysteries of this powerful nation.
