From the multi-award-winning author of Burial Rites comes a brilliantly crafted tale that delves deep into themes of forbidden love, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of survival. Set against the expansive and diverse landscapes of 19th-century Prussia and the untamed wilderness of South Australia, Devotion by Hannah Kent takes readers on an unforgettable journey.

Growing up in the secluded village of Kay in Prussia in 1836, Hanne Nussbaum is a girl who defies the norms and expectations of her time. Preferring the wild embrace of the forest over the mundane and restrictive confines of womanhood, Hanne feels isolated and misunderstood by her community. Her life takes a pivotal turn when she meets Thea, a captivating and kindred spirit who sees and accepts her true self.

However, Hanne and her family soon face forced exile due to religious persecution. As they embark on a perilous journey aboard an overcrowded and disease-stricken ship to South Australia, the unrelenting hardships test their endurance and faith. Amid the trials, the hauntingly beautiful song of whales resonate with Hanne, filling her soul with both awe and solace. Through these dark times, Hanne and Thea's profound bond blossoms into a rare and unbreakable love, defying societal norms and enduring all challenges.

Devotion is more than just a historical novel; it is a poignant exploration of love that transcends boundaries and adversity. Hannah Kent masterfully weaves a narrative that is both heart-wrenching and uplifting, ultimately portraying a relationship of remarkable resilience.
