Shop Management
Shop Management
Frederick Winslow Taylor (March 20, 1856 - March 21, 1915) was an American mechanical engineer renowned for his methods to enhance industrial efficiency. As one of the first management consultants, Taylor's work was groundbreaking, and in 1911 he encapsulated his efficiency techniques in his book The Principles of Scientific Management, which was voted the most influential management book of the twentieth century by the Fellows of the Academy of Management in 2001.
Taylor's pioneering efforts in applying engineering principles to factory work were crucial to the creation and growth of the field known today as industrial engineering. While he gained fame for his contributions to scientific management, he amassed wealth through his patents on steel-process improvements. These management principles are sometimes referred to as Taylorism.
Taylor believed that, through analysis, the "one best way" to perform a task could be identified. He is most remembered for the development of the stopwatch time study, in conjunction with Frank Gilbreth's motion study methods. This collaboration eventually gave rise to the field of time and motion study. By deconstructing a job into its basic components and measuring each with precision, he sought to improve efficiency.
One of Taylor's most notable studies focused on shovels; he observed labourers using the same shovel for different materials and determined that the optimal load was 21½ pounds. He then sought or designed shovels tailored to each material to scoop that specific amount. Despite initial challenges in applying his concepts and his eventual dismissal from the Bethlehem Iron Company/Bethlehem Steel Company, Taylor successfully persuaded workers whose compensation was production-based to adopt his shovelling techniques. This involved breaking down movements into component elements and suggesting improvements.
His disciples, particularly Henry Gantt, played a significant role in industry-wide implementation of Taylor's ideas. Moreover, his subsequent publication, Shop Management, was well-received, further cementing his influence and legacy.
