Ask Your Developer by Jeff Lawson, the developer turned CEO of Twilio, presents a revolutionary manifesto for leveraging the full power of software developers within organisations. Twilio, heralded as one of Bloomberg Businessweek’s Top 50 Companies to Watch in 2021, serves as the backdrop for Lawson's insightful exploration into how the role of developers is transforming industries.

As every sector, from banking and retail to insurance and finance, embraces digital transformation, companies are discovering that superior software is the key to winning customer loyalty and market dominance. The conversation has evolved from a simple build vs. buy dilemma to a critical build vs. die imperative. In an era where survival hinges on digital capabilities, how can companies effectively navigate this transition?

Lawson elucidates that software developers are no longer mere digital factory workers. They are highly skilled, well-compensated, and vital to a company's competitive edge in the digital economy. Yet many organisations fail to harness their true potential, treating them as cogs in the machine rather than creative problem solvers and product innovators. Through compelling anecdotes and detailed analysis, Lawson makes the case that developers, when engaged as partners, can drive significant business transformation and breakthrough products.

Drawing on examples from tech giants like Google and Amazon as well as nimble one-person startups, Lawson demonstrates how companies that integrate developers into the core of their strategy consistently outperform their competitors. According to Lawson, successful leaders follow a triad of principles: recognising the increasing importance of developers, understanding and motivating this unique workforce, and making substantial investments in their success.

With his dual expertise as a software developer and the CEO of a publicly traded company, Lawson is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between executive management and the vibrant culture of high-performing developers. Ask Your Developer serves as an essential toolkit for business leaders, product managers, technical leaders, software developers, and executives, all unified by the goal of creating exceptional digital products and user experiences.

In today’s digital landscape, the ability to compete hinges on one crucial strategy: Ask Your Developer.
