Poetics
Suitable for all students of Greek theatre and literature, this book examines the dramatic elements of plot, character, language and spectacle that combine to produce pity and fear in the audience, and asks why we derive pleasure from this apparently painful process.

DescriptionAristotle's Poetics stands as a seminal work in the history of literary criticism and is a cornerstone of Western philosophy. In this profound analysis of Greek tragedy, Aristotle meticulously dissects the elements that converge to create the quintessential dramatic experience. Delving into the intricacies of plot, character, and spectacle, Aristotle elucidates how these components intertwine to evoke feelings of pity and fear in the audience, ultimately leading to a cathartic experience that paradoxically brings pleasure. This treatise has significantly shaped the discourse on drama and theatrical art forms for centuries.
The core of Poetics explores the concept of mimesis (imitation), which Aristotle asserts is a fundamental aspect of human nature and the foundation of all art. Drama, and particularly tragedy, is an imitation of action and life, perpetuating human beings' propensity to learn and glean meaning from representations of reality. Aristotle also introduces the notion of hamartia (error or tragic flaw), which often leads to the protagonist's downfall, yet serves as a pivotal element of plot development and audience engagement.
Central to Aristotle’s philosophy in Poetics is the idea of katharsis, a term that refers to the purification or purging of emotions, specifically pity and fear, through art. This therapeutic release is achieved when the audience experiences these intense emotions vicariously through the dramatic portrayal, leaving them with a sense of emotional renewal and intellectual satisfaction.
Furthermore, Aristotle examines the structure of a well-crafted plot. He emphasises that the most compelling tragedies are those that involve complication and resolution, alongside recognitions and reversals. These elements create a dynamic narrative that captivates and profoundly impacts the audience. Aristotle also pays homage to the great tragedians of Classical Greece, such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, acknowledging the mythological heroes they vividly brought to the stage, whose tales epitomise the principles delineated in Poetics.
This translation of Poetics offers modern readers invaluable insights into the mechanics of dramatic art and remains an essential resource for students, scholars, and enthusiasts of literature and theatre. Through its enduring wisdom, Poetics continues to influence contemporary thinking about drama and the human condition.
