We read this as a book club and I think it's one of the only books we've all given 5 stars to. Its a big book but so gripping that I sped through it, and the story it shares about the life of Dasani and her family is an incredible snapshot into what is often left unseen at the borders of society where we would prefer not to look.
This novel is short and quick, and i WISH i had had another 500 pages of the stories to sink into, but somehow Anna North ties together a forensic anthropologist trying to figure out the mysteries of a body found in a bog in 2018, a druid and Celtic Queen forging political relationships, and the moss that lives omnipresent as the humans carry on. Its botanical, its mysterious, its beautifully written (especially the sections narrated by the moss itself which I loved). A unique read but one that delivers on the mysteries of the land and the people upon it.
A good read for those whom have an interest in middle earth
1 of 2 of the best recipe books I own - the 2nd is TONIGHT. Exceptional, easy, tasty recipes- we love both of them.
I love the Vera Stanhope series but it was great to read about Jimmy Perez again. Three staggered deaths of men interested in history propel the plot set in small communities of the Orkney Islands. Scandals, affairs, plagiarism, community spirit, competitiveness and petty prejudices add spice to a surprising resolution. I loved the atmosphere created by the Orkney landscape. Great holiday read.
Found this on a BookHero newsletter, and I couldn’t put this book down, I was gripped within 20 pages. I would recommend this to any leader or manager. The career, leadership style, and relatability of Bob Iger as a person, is surprising considering his status and experience. I didn’t know anything about him, but his journey to the top, and at the top, of Disney is certainly an inspirational ride of a lifetime.
Been waiting for this one for a few months, so happy it arrived before xmas my daughtwr will love it
The Names has such an interesting premise. I loved every page! I have bought it as a gift it’s so good. Highly recommend.
This book is full of yummy salads with lots of acope for variations and adding your own creative flair. Buying from Book Hero was super easy.
I had previously read Shogun and Taipan written by the same Author, both of which I enjoyed reading. Subsequently purchased King Rat, which I found disappointing and not to the level of the previous two books.
Married twenty years. Three children and a dog. All suddenly shattered by a phone call. Startling, raw, poetic, Belle Burden’s memoir of marital meltdown is by turns powerfully emotional and profoundly moving in its portrayal of the complexities of love, living together, raising a family... and ultimately, discovering a stranger in your bed. Yet, as Burden writes, “Even in my lowest moments, even in the nadirs of hurt and betrayal, I still believed in our love story, in our happiness as a family.” At times hard to put down, at times hard to read on, Strangers is a poignant memoir reflecting on life, love, living together, and falling apart.
I found this coming-of-age story mixed with a modern war tale equal parts horrifying and beautiful. Not only are two young boys struggling to understand their new reality in the Ukraine and process the daily horrors they're experiencing, but Artem is coming to grips with his sexuality. These really big issues are explored sensitively.
Structured through short chapters, I raced through breathless to discover what would happen next. I don't often cry reading books but I did with this one.
If the war in the Ukraine seems like an abstract notion seen through your screen, you need to read this book.
This is a surprisingly fun wartime romp that takes you from the streets of London to the intrigues of Lisbon during the second World War. It's got everything from lost family members, to war time friendships and the family we create for ourselves.
Even though it's set during World World 2 and includes the constant threat of Nazis, spies and a surprise appearance by British royalty, I found it light and easy to read - although I wanted more bookshop time!
It's the kind of book you'll enjoy picking up when relaxing on a summer day.
A slow moving if somewhat violent story of cop coruption in Queensland in the mid eighties within a new Casino .
None of the characters are particularly good at their job – people come and go – some of them permantly.
The characters seem to be lost and unsure of themselves except perhaps the top of the criminal chain and the top cops.
It's an unplesant story and most the characters are likewise – I found it hard to like many of them and ( for me) there were too many characters – I had trouble following the story.
Sadly in the end I felt lightly addicted so much I had to get to the end – the end came with a bump and the bad guys seem to come out on top.
Aotearoa journalist, and Newshub TV presenter, Mike McRoberts’ refreshingly candid, rewarding, highly accessible and illuminating memoir is one of reconnecting with his Māori roots. Admitting the shame he felt at his disconnection from te ao Māori and te reo, McRoberts invites readers to join his journey to reclaim his heritage and language, embracing them as “taonga” - treasures central to identity. McRoberts’ writing has a relaxed tone, effortlessly fusing fascinating autobiographical detail and personal reflections with a call for others to reconnect to and cherish their cultural heritage. Doing so may not be easy but, as McRoberts observes: “There’s a well-known saying, ‘He pike, he heke’ – there are ups and downs. It reflects the idea that your learning journey, or indeed any journey, rarely follows a straight line.
if you can get past the sex, yes there's a lot of it, (but it is in context with the basilisk way of life) Then its a good story but the last chapter weenched my heart out. I have been
never shed tears over a book before , but this one hit the spot
One of my favorite reads of 2025. I’m really glad I stuck with it, because once you start book two (Golden Son), there’s no turning back. I ended up finishing six books in just two months—no regrets. Can't wait for the release of the last book or the series next year (Red God).
Also, this edition is solid quality and well worth the price, in my opinion.
Shadow Weaver is a fun ride - a gothic style dark romantasy about Brienne of Tarth style main character who is on a journey of vengeance and may or may not meet a couple of very different love interests along the way. Similar kind of style of romantasy to both knight and the moth, and quick silver, and I’m looking forward to what comes next after that absolute cliff hanger of a final act!
Note - Not appropriate for younger fantasy readers.
Fantastic book. Great selection at Book Hero and always super quick delivery and excellent customer service.
Brilliant. Bought as a Christmas present for someone but want to now get myself one!
