The Black Swan

What have the invention of the wheel, Pompeii, the Wall Street Crash, Harry Potter and the internet got in common? Why are all forecasters con-artists? What can Catherine the Great's lovers tell us about probability? Why should you never run for a train or read a newspaper? This title deals with this questions.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In The Black Swan, Nassim Nicholas Taleb explores the profound effects of random, unexpected events that shape our world. These events, which he dubs "Black Swans," lie beyond the realm of regular expectations and have massive impacts on the course of history and in our daily lives. Taleb introduces readers to a world where the improbable is more influential than the predictable, challenging conventional wisdom and the limits of human knowledge.

Why are we so often unwilling to accept that life is unpredictable? In this brilliant book, Taleb distils his idiosyncratic wisdom to demolish our illusions, contrasting the classical values of courage, elegance and erudition against modern philistinism and phoniness. Only by accepting what we don't know, he shows, can we see the world as it really is.

Drawing from a variety of disciplines, including economics, science, and philosophy, The Black Swan takes readers on a journey through the randomness and uncertainty that define our existence. Taleb's sharp wit and piercing insights are paired with engaging anecdotes and examples from history and contemporary life.

With audacious and thought-provoking observations, Taleb exposes the fragility of our knowledge and builds a case for a more humble approach to understanding the world. His critiques concern various topics such as superiority, wealth, academia, modernity, and technology, ultimately challenging the reader to reevaluate their perception of reality.

"Happily provocative ... blistering ... his observations concern superiority, wealth, suckerdom, academia, modernity, technology and the all-purpose, ignorant 'they' ... very quotable" - The New York Times

The Black Swan is an invaluable resource for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of the modern world and make sense of the inherent unpredictability of life. Taleb's timeless wisdom encourages us to embrace uncertainty and rethink the ways we understand and interact with the world around us. Whether you're a student, professional, or lifelong learner, this groundbreaking work will leave you with a fresh perspective on the unexpected forces that shape our lives.

About the Author

Nassim Nicholas Taleb is a radical no-nonsense philosopher for our times. He has spent his life immersing himself in problems of luck, uncertainty, probability, and knowledge, and he has led three high-profile careers around his ideas, as a man of letters, as a businessman-trader, and as a university professor and researcher. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Risk Engineering at New York University's School of Engineering. He is the author of the 4-volume INCERTO (Antifragile, The Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness, and The Bed of Procrustes). Taleb refuses all awards and honours as they debase knowledge by turning it into competitive sports.
