*WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD 2014*
A stunning narrative that reveals China as we have never understood it before.
Age of Ambition by Evan Osnos is an enlightening and captivating narrative that delves deep into the complexities of modern China. With an engaging storytelling style, Osnos brings readers into the heart of a nation amidst unprecedented transformation, capturing the pulse of ambition that drives its populace. The book is not merely a recounting of historical facts and economic data but a vivid tapestry woven with personal stories of individuals navigating the seismic shifts shaping their country.
The journey begins by introducing a young army captain, who risked execution to swim from free-market Taiwan to Communist China, a daring act that epitomises the personal sacrifices and calculated risks undertaken by those caught in China's turbulent socio-political landscape. We meet a barber who amassed a fortune of $150 million in the gambling dens of Macau, reflecting the unpredictable pathways to wealth in a rapidly changing economy. Equally compelling is the story of China's richest woman, a recycling tycoon affectionately known as the 'Wastepaper Queen,' whose rise to prominence showcases the ingenuity and resilience found within its emergent class of entrepreneurs.
Osnos' narrative encompasses an array of characters who collectively represent the billions of individual lives that compose China's national story. These stories unfold in the contrasting locales of remote rural farms and opulent city mansions, as well as within the halls of power of the world's largest authoritarian regime. With an eye on the broader picture, the book examines the defining clash between the aspirations of individuals and the Communist Party's relentless efforts to maintain its grip on power.
In capturing this struggle, Age of Ambition reveals a China imbued with boundless possibility and teeming with romance. The contradictions are staggering: it is the world's largest buyer of Rolls Royces and Ferraris, yet the word "luxury" is banned from billboards. It has a burgeoning Christian population that exceeds the membership of the Communist Party. The paradoxes extend to governance as well, questioning why a government celebrated for lifting more people out of poverty than any other persistently restricts freedom of expression.
Winner of the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2014, Age of Ambition is the culmination of years of rigorous research. Osnos' intimate and insightful examination offers readers a profound understanding of contemporary China, revealing its complexities in a way never before accomplished. This book is essential reading for anyone looking to comprehend the forces shaping the future of the world's most populous nation.
