Dancer from the Dance

Describes a New York that has completely disappeared and for which I longed - stuck in closed-on-Sunday's London' Rupert Everett

Set against the backdrop of 1970s New York, a city steeped in decadence and transformation, Dancer from the Dance by Andrew Holleran is a captivating tale that follows the journey of Anthony Malone. Disenchanted with his life as a seemingly straight, small-town lawyer, Malone seeks liberation in the throbbing heartbeats of disco and the hedonistic allure of the city's emerging gay scene. What he finds is a world brimming with dance parties, saunas, and illicit encounters in deserted parks — a stark contrast to his past existence.

At the epicentre of this new life, Malone encounters the flamboyant Andrew Sutherland, a queen who effortlessly embodies the spirit of the era. Under Sutherland's wing, Malone is introduced to the unrestrained pleasures and heartaches of New York's gay nightlife, from vibrant city nights to sultry Fire Island days. However, amidst the euphoria, Malone's soul yearns for something deeper. His quest for genuine love and self-acceptance propels him through a journey where he must ultimately seek his own liberation.

First published in 1978, Dancer from the Dance is heralded as a seminal work of post-Stonewall literature, offering an authentic glimpse into a bygone era. Holleran's narrative is imbued with wit, eroticism, and unflinching lyricism, making it not just a novel but a heartfelt love letter to New York's hedonistic past. The novel captures the exuberance and the poignancy of a community coming into its own while grappling with the universal quest for love and identity.

With an introduction by Alan Hollinghurst, this edition reintroduces a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers. A favourite among fans of It's A Sin, Dancer from the Dance remains a profoundly moving testament to the brilliance of human passions and the intense beauty of their fleeting moments.

As Rupert Everett poignantly noted, it is "a life changing read" that describes a New York that has completely disappeared yet continues to captivate the imagination. Harpers also lauds it as "astonishingly beautiful... the best gay novel written by anyone of our generation."

This return to print commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, celebrating a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. Dancer from the Dance continues to be a vital and unforgettable narrative, echoing the voices and experiences of a generation that dared to dance and dream.
