The Russo-Ukrainian War

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Russo-Ukrainian War by Serhii Plokhy is an urgent and compelling examination of one of the most significant conflicts of our times. Renowned Ukrainian-American historian Plokhy delves into the depths of the conflict that erupted dramatically on 24 February 2022, when Russia stunned the world by invading Ukraine. As Europe witnesses its largest conflict since the Second World War, this book explores the ongoing struggle, tracing its roots and analysing its complex causes, progression, and far-reaching consequences.

With the invasion tearing lives apart, Plokhy combines a thorough historical perspective with gripping details from the ground, both in the corridors of power and in the trenches. He meticulously charts the origins of the conflict, dating back to the collapse of the Russian empire, through the rise and fall of the USSR, and up to Ukraine's journey towards democratic politics—a trajectory increasingly despised by its eastern neighbour, Russia. This comprehensive history highlights how longstanding geopolitical tensions have catalysed into today's full-scale war.

The narrative inside The Russo-Ukrainian War is not just a recount of events but a profound analysis of the shift in geopolitical dynamics post-Cold War. Plokhy sheds light on how Ukraine's resilient defiance, coupled with the West's unified front, poses a significant challenge to Vladimir Putin's aspirations of resurrecting Russia as a dominant global power. The book underscores the increased polarisation of the world along a newly emerging axis and provides a thought-provoking insight into the future implications of this intensified global friction.

What makes this work remarkable is Plokhy's ability to intertwine the larger historical sweep with vivid on-the-ground realities, offering readers a well-rounded perspective on the conflict. His expert analysis is both enlightening and riveting, ensuring that the work stands as present-minded history at its finest. The Russo-Ukrainian War is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the stakes involved in Ukraine and the broader repercussions for international order and stability.
