In the critically acclaimed novel The Fifth Woman by Henning Mankell, Inspector Kurt Wallander faces one of the most challenging cases of his career, delving into a series of gruesome murders that push him to his limits both personally and professionally.

It all begins with the harrowing and senseless massacre of four nuns and a fifth woman during a night-time attack in Africa. A year later, in Sweden, Wallander is drawn into the case of a missing elderly birdwatcher. What starts as a routine investigation quickly escalates when the birdwatcher's body is discovered impaled in a gruesome trap of sharpened bamboo poles. The carefully orchestrated nature of the murder suggests the work of a meticulous and cold-blooded killer.

As Wallander and his dedicated team dig deeper, they uncover more layers of mystery and horror. Shortly after, another man goes missing, raising the chilling possibility of a calculating serial killer on the loose. Wallander's life is turned upside down as he is consumed by the investigation, striving to find the connections between the victims and uncover the truth behind these vicious crimes.

The Fifth Woman is more than just a gripping detective story; it is also an in-depth exploration of Wallander's character, revealing his vulnerabilities and relentless commitment to justice. Henning Mankell masterfully weaves together themes of brutality, retribution, and the human condition, creating a narrative that is both compelling and thoughtful.

Winner of the prestigious Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger for Sidetracked, Henning Mankell continues to captivate readers with his intricate plots, richly developed characters, and keen insight into the complexities of human nature.

This novel is a must-read for fans of crime thrillers and those who appreciate finely crafted, thought-provoking mysteries that linger long after the final page.
