Immerse yourself in the enthralling world of R. F. Kuang's groundbreaking trilogy, available as a complete boxed set: The Poppy War, The Dragon Republic, and The Burning God. These novels invite readers into a richly realised epic, meticulously weaving together the histories and mythologies of a fantastical version of China during the tumultuous twentieth century. Bursting with treachery, magic, and an unrelenting examination of power and identity, this series is a must-read for fantasy aficionados.

The Poppy War introduces us to the formidable Rin, a war orphan whose fierce determination earns her a spot at Nikan's prestigious military academy. There, amidst an atmosphere of fierce competition and profound rivalries, she uncovers her latent powers of shamanism. Rin learns that ancient gods, considered myths, are very much alive, bestowing her with perilous abilities. As tensions escalate between the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, Rin realises her supernatural powers might be pivotal in preserving her homeland. Yet, wielding such formidable energy, thanks to the volatile Phoenix god, comes with a dire cost: a creeping loss of her humanity.

In The Dragon Republic, the saga continues as Rin grapples with the haunting aftermath of her catastrophic actions in battle. Tormented by guilt and the demanding voice of the Phoenix, she struggles against her own demons and a burgeoning opium addiction. Aligning herself with the Dragon Warlord, an adversary of the traitorous Empress, Rin must navigate a web of lies and shifting allegiances. As she becomes enmeshed in revolutionary fervour, the lure to unleash the Phoenix’s wrath becomes increasingly seductive, threatening to plunge the world into chaos once more.

The trilogy reaches its explosive climax in The Burning God. Having repelled both foreign invaders and the nefarious Empress, Rin stands at the precipice of power. Emboldened by the adoration of her people, who view her as a saviour goddess, she embarks on a mission to restore the shamanic traditions threatened by her enemies. As her influence grows, so does the Phoenix's intoxicating call for destruction. Rin must confront the ultimate test: to harness her powers for unity or give in to the apocalyptic flames, consuming everything in her wake.

This trilogy not only captivates with its gripping narrative and multidimensional characters but also offers a poignant exploration of war, politics, and colonialism—complex themes seamlessly interwoven with vivid worldbuilding. As Library Journal aptly notes, "Mixing historical parallels of Chinese history, the themes of war, politics, and colonialism are balanced with terrific, flawed characters and amazing worldbuilding," this trilogy is a masterful blend of action, reflection, and imagination.
