DescriptionFaceless Killers by Henning Mankell is the first title in the critically acclaimed Inspector Wallander series. This taut, gripping novel follows Inspector Kurt Wallander as he navigates a world of darkness and brutality.
One frozen January morning at 5am, Inspector Wallander responds to what he believes is a routine call out. Upon reaching an isolated farmhouse, he is confronted with a horrifying scene: an elderly man has been tortured and beaten to death, and his wife lies barely alive beside her shattered husband, both victims of an inexplicably savage attack.
Before succumbing to her injuries, the woman presents Wallander with a single, unsettling clue—the perpetrators might have been foreign. When this sensitive information is leaked to the press, it triggers an explosive wave of xenophobia and racial tension across Sweden.
Wallander's personal life is in disarray. His wife has left him, his daughter refuses to communicate with him, and even his aged father can barely tolerate his presence. Consumed by loneliness and existential despair, Wallander drowns himself in work, sustains himself with unhealthy food, and often drinks his nights away. Despite his personal turmoil, Wallander must set aside his hardships to solve this gruesome case. As he delves deeper into the investigation, he is faced with mounting racial hatred and a ticking clock, forcing him to confront the darkest corners of human nature.
Henning Mankell masterfully crafts a story that is not only a thrilling murder mystery but also a profound commentary on societal issues. Known for its intricate plot and complex characterisation, Faceless Killers delves into the prejudices lingering beneath the surface of a seemingly peaceful nation.
This novel was awarded the CWA Gold Dagger for Best Crime Novel for its ability to blend suspense with a critical examination of contemporary issues, making it a must-read for fans of crime fiction.
