The Women of Rothschild

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Mistresses of Cliveden, an enthralling, sumptuous and surprising history of the Rothschild women

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Women of Rothschild by Natalie Livingstone is a meticulously researched and enthralling narrative that unveils the untold story of the influential women behind the Rothschild family. Spanning from the dawn of the nineteenth century up to the early years of the twenty-first century, this book reveals the remarkable contributions and resilience of the Rothschild women, who rose from anonymity to become pivotal figures in their spheres of influence.

The book chronicles their extraordinary journey from the confines of the Frankfurt ghetto to the expansive landscapes of East End London, the Eastern seaboard of the United States, Spitalfields, and Scottish castles. The narrative traverses historically significant sites such as Bletchley Park and Buchenwald and extends to the Vatican and Palestine, charting the expansive reach of the Rothschild legacy.

The Rothschild women were pioneers in a society where being both Jewish and female placed them as outsiders. Determined to defy the expectations imposed by a patriarchal family and a Christian society, these women banded together, drawing strength from the legacies of their mothers and aunts. They emerged as influential hostesses, skilled diplomats, and astute advisors to prime ministers. They advocated for social reform, participated in electoral campaigns, and even ventured into the stock exchange.

Livingstone’s work brings to light a diverse cast of characters—misfits and conformists, conservatives and idealists, performers and introverts—interacting with prominent historical figures such as Rossini, Mendelssohn, Disraeli, Gladstone, Chaim Weizmann, Queen Victoria, and Albert Einstein. The Rothschild women also intersected with colourful personalities, including amphetamine dealers and temperance campaigners, and even racing with a musician like Miles Davis.

Intriguingly, these women were not only significant in political and social reforms but also in making groundbreaking contributions such as breaking codes during wartime, championing the environmental movement, revolutionising women's tennis by introducing the overarm serve, and more. Their influence and tenacity not only shaped their family's legacy but also left an indelible mark on history.

Absorbing and compulsive, The Women of Rothschild eloquently gives voice to these complex, privileged, and gifted women, whose vision and determination significantly impacted the course of history. This is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the multifaceted roles women played in shaping the modern world.
