The Klansman’s Son by R. Derek Black is a compelling narrative about transformation and redemption. Derek Black was groomed to inherit the white nationalist movement in the United States. His father, Don Black, a former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, founded Stormfront, the internet's first white supremacist website—where Derek contributed by building the kids' page. Under the influence of his godfather and mentor, David Duke, racist hate, though often masked by a veneer of respectability, was all Derek knew.

In 2013, while at college, Derek made the pivotal decision to publicly renounce white nationalism and apologise for the pain he had caused. This decision led to estrangement from most of his family as he retreated into academia, believing that his past actions left him no place in the public eye. However, in 2016, as Donald Trump's rhetoric echoed the hateful ideologies he once supported, Derek recognised the spread and mainstream acceptance of these ideas and realised he couldn't remain silent.

This book offers a thoughtful, insightful, and moving account of Derek's unique journey, providing significant lessons for our turbulent times. Derek gives a rare insider perspective on the rise of white nationalism and illustrates how a young man indoctrinated with hate can transform into an anti-racist advocate. Few understand the ideology, motivations, or tactics of the white nationalist movement as Derek does, and few have undergone such profound change. As coded language and rising authoritarianism continue to disseminate the white nationalist agenda, The Klansman’s Son emerges as an essential read featuring a powerful voice.
