Hey Mum, What's a Half-Caste?
Lorraine McGee-Sippel was just a small girl when she asked her parents what a half-caste was. It was the 1950s and the first step on a journey that would span decades and lead her to search for her birth family.
Hey Mum, What's a Half-Caste? by Lorraine McGee-Sippel tells the compelling story of a young girl's question that sparks a lifelong journey. As a small girl in the 1950s, Lorraine McGee-Sippel asked her parents what a half-caste was, marking the beginning of her quest to find her birth family.
Set against the backdrop of the Rudd government's Apology, McGee-Sippel aligns herself with the Stolen Generations, revealing the profound impact of a government policy. This policy led to her adoptive parents being misinformed that their daughter was of Afro-American descent.
More than a tale of displacement, McGee-Sippel's account is an honest exploration of the challenges and fragility of reconnection and cultural identity. It celebrates the triumphs of acceptance and the quest for personal and cultural understanding.
