We are creating society.

Creating Schools reminds us that while we argue about reading and instruction styles, the teaching profession is being strangled, and students (and teachers!) in record numbers are feeling alienated from education. The implications of this play out in crime, violence, and an inestimable cost to society.

How we treat and support our teachers in the education system becomes the lens through which our students receive and view education, and then the lens through which they view the world outside of education. It can be characterised by trust, innovation, creativity, autonomy, critical thinking, collaboration, and inspiration or blighted by excessive compliance, control, dependency, micromanaging, standardisation, meaningless competition, arbitrary ranking, and superficial judgement.

We are creating society.

If education leaders do not create change in the best interests of students and the profession, then we risk more than lowered education standards and reputations. The time to act is now.

About the Author

Michael Lawrence and Dr. Fabio D'Agostin are experienced teachers who, after decades teaching in primarily non-government schools, through their experiences in Finnish education and research came to see that the education system they were a part of was not working for anyone other than a privileged few. They were particularly concerned at the obvious attempts to shut down innovative thinking in the system, and the dumbing down of the teaching profession. Both are committed to making teaching a highly respected, desirable profession, and schools a place where students enjoy learning. They firmly believe that every child can be a successful student and that the future demands creative, independent thinkers rather than standard factory model students. Lawrence's previous education title, Teaching 3, 2, 1... looked at the Finnish school system. Dr. D'Agostin's PhD research explored the connections between student's emotions and effective learning.
