Gold! (My New Zealand Story)

Set in the 1860s, this re-release for a new audience takes place in the gold rush town of Dunstan, in New Zealand’s South Island. Here, Mary Brogan is on a quest to find her father. Mary and her family moved to New Zealand from Australia before her father, who intended to join them later. However, unforeseen events have kept Mr Brogan in Australia for the past seven years, leaving Mary's mother to raise the two children on her own.

The family now lives in poverty in Dunedin, where Mary’s mother insists she must leave school and start contributing to the household. But with gold discovered in the Otago hills, Mary is convinced her father will be there. If only she can find him, she believes their struggles will finally end.

Determined, Mary disguises herself as a boy, adopting the name Harry, and undertakes the long and perilous journey from Dunedin to Dunstan—the centre of the latest gold rush.
