In April 1943, the body of a British soldier was discovered by a sardine fisherman off the coast of Spain, setting in motion one of the most audacious and successful deception operations of the Second World War. This seemingly random discovery was the linchpin of Operation Mincemeat, a covert mission that deceived the Nazi high command, misdirected German troops, and saved countless lives.

Operation Mincemeat was conceived by two eccentric and brilliant minds: an RAF officer with a flair for the dramatic and a resourceful Jewish barrister. Together, they orchestrated a masterful ruse involving a diverse and intriguing cast of characters—a forensic pathologist, a gold prospector, an inventor, a stunning secret service secretary, a daring submarine captain, three novelists, a transvestite English spymaster, a cantankerous admiral with a love for fly-fishing, and a dead Welsh tramp.

The mission's centrepiece was a unique secret agent: a deceased man carrying false documents intended to convince the Germans that the Allies planned to invade Greece rather than Sicily. The elaborate deception started in a windowless basement beneath Whitehall and extended through a convoluted journey across London, Scotland, Spain, and ultimately to Hitler's desk in Germany.

Ben Macintyre, acclaimed author of Agent Zigzag, meticulously reconstructs this extraordinary story using a wealth of resources, including private documents, photographs, personal memories, letters, and diaries. The narrative is enriched with newly released material from the intelligence files of MI5 and Naval Intelligence, providing a comprehensive and thrilling account of Operation Mincemeat. Macintyre's skillful storytelling brings to life this unparalleled wartime subterfuge and reveals the human ingenuity and daring behind it.

As a RICHARD AND JUDY BOOK CLUB SELECTION, Operation Mincemeat delves into the intricate web of lies and deception spun by Churchill's spies. The book not only chronicles the lengths to which the Allies went to ensure their victory but also paints a vivid portrait of the unforgettable individuals whose ingenuity and bravery made it possible. Immerse yourself in a world where imagination, deception, and craftsmanship were the weapons that turned the tide of war.
