LONGLISTED FOR THE 2024 ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE IN FICTION

The acclaimed author of The Serpent’s Gift returns with this “deep and beautiful” (Jacqueline Woodson, New York Times bestselling author) story about a queer Black woman working to stay clean, pull her life together, and heal after being released from prison.

In Pomegranate, Helen Elaine Lee invites readers into the life of Ranita Atwater, a queer Black woman who is near the end of serving a four-year sentence for opiate possession at Oak Hills Correctional Center. As Ranita approaches her release, the narrative delves into her struggles and aspirations, painting a vivid picture of her determination. After three years of sobriety, Ranita is resolute about maintaining her freedom from addiction and regaining custody of her two children. Yet, leaving Oak Hills also means leaving behind her lover, Maxine, whose influence has been a beacon of hope and self-reinvention for her.

Ranita’s journey is fraught with the challenges of staying free from the societal and personal demons that once ensnared her. Her mantra, “My name is Ranita, and I’m an addict,” echoes through her efforts in recovery meetings, but the question looms—who else can she become? As she navigates the complex aftermath of incarceration, Ranita confronts her past mistakes and deep-seated wounds with a voice that is fierce, intelligent, and, at times, darkly humorous.

Pomegranate is more than a tale of recovery; it is a poignant exploration of queer Black womanhood and the persistent marginalization faced in America. Helen Elaine Lee masterfully weaves a story with lyrical precision, offering an unflinching look at the destructive cycles of addiction and the harsh realities of the prison system. Through Ranita's eyes, readers witness a heart-wrenching and inspiring path to self-discovery, redemption, and the enduring power of love, family, memory, and faith.

With exquisite prose and unsparing honesty, Pomegranate stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Helen Elaine Lee's rich characterisation and storytelling prowess make this an essential read for those seeking to understand the deeply personal battles that shape lives. This novel is not just a story; it is an experience that stays with you, urging reflection and empathy.
