Jules Machias explores identity, gender fluidity, and the power of friendship and acceptance in this dual-narrative story about two kids who join forces to save a dog . . . but wind up saving each other.
Ash is no stranger to feeling like an outcast. For someone who cycles through genders, itβs a daily struggle to feel in control of how people perceive you. Some days Ash is undoubtedly girl, but other times, 100 percent guy. Daniel lacks control tooβof his emotions. Heβs been told heβs overly sensitive more times than he can count. He canβt help the way he is, and he sure wishes someone would accept him for it.
So when Danielβs big heart leads him to rescue a dog thatβs about to be euthanised, heβs relieved to find Ash willing to help. The two bond over their four-legged secret. When they start catching feelings for each other, however, things go from cute to complicated. Daniel thinks Ash is all girl . . . what happens when he finds out thereβs more to Ashβs story?
With so much on the lineβtruth, identity, acceptance, and the life of an adorable pup named Chewbarkaβwill Ash and Daniel forever feel at war with themselves because they donβt fit into the worldβs binaries? Or will their friendship help them embrace the beauty of living in between?

About the Author
Jules Machias's debut novel Both Can Be True was named an Indie Next List Pick and was inspired by their experience growing up feeling stuck in the wrong body. Fight + Flight is Jules's second novel and draws on their own battles with physical and mental health. Their writing about gender and healthcare has appeared in Forbes, the American Marketing Association, MediaPost, and more. After graduating, with honors, with a BA in creative writing from Miami University, they went on to work for veterinarians, construction companies, a car parts warehouse, and a middle school for kids with disabilities. After working as a writer and editor in the corporate advertising world for sixteen years, they now own and operate an editing and proofreading business for clients in publishing and advertising. Jules lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with their family and three rescue dogs: the world's happiest pit bull, a chihuahua with congestive heart failure, and a paralyzed terrier.
