The Black Loch marks the long-awaited return of Fin Macleod, Peter May's much-loved hero of the internationally bestselling Lewis Trilogy. Set against the hauntingly beautiful yet ferocious landscapes of the Isle of Lewis, this novel weaves a rich tapestry of intrigue, family secrets, and haunting memories.

The story begins with a grim discovery: the body of eighteen-year-old TV personality Caitlin is found abandoned on a desolate beach at the head of An Loch Dubh—known as the Black Loch. As a proficient swimmer and canoeist, it is unthinkable that Caitlin could have drowned. Suspicion and whispers of foul play quickly circulate, tainting the tranquility of this remote locale.

Fin Macleod, who left the island a decade ago to escape its painful memories, is reluctantly drawn back when he learns that his estranged, married son, Fionnlagh, was having a clandestine affair with the deceased girl and is now the prime suspect. Determined to clear his son's name, Fin, accompanied by Marsaili, returns to the Isle of Lewis. As Fin delves deeper into the investigation, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Every lead turns over more secrets, challenging everything he thought he knew about the island and its inhabitants.

The journey to uncover the truth thrusts Fin into a reckoning with his own past and a tragedy at the salmon farm cages of East Loch Roag, where unresolved grief still lingers. As the narrative propels towards its tension-filled climax, long-buried secrets and suppressed emotions surface, forging a path to startling revelations and violent revenge.

The Black Loch takes readers on an immersive journey through a landscape where nature is as unforgiving as the secrets it conceals. Peter May's masterful storytelling combines suspense and mystery as family ties and hidden relationships collide, creating an enthralling tale of trust, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of truth amidst the eerie shadow of the Black Loch.

About the Author

Peter May was born and raised in Scotland. He was an award-winning journalist at the age of twenty-one and a published novelist at twenty-six. When his first book was adapted as a major drama series for the BBC, he quit journalism and during the high-octane fifteen years that followed, became one of Scotland's most successful television dramatists. He created three prime-time drama series, presided over two of the highest-rated serials in his homeland as script editor and producer, and worked on more than 1,000 episodes of ratings-topping drama before deciding to leave television to return to his first love, writing novels.

In 2021, he was awarded the CWA Dagger in the Library Award. He has also won several literature awards in France, received the USA's Barry Award for The Blackhouse, the first in his internationally bestselling Lewis Trilogy; and in 2014 was awarded the ITV Specsavers Crime Thriller Book Club Best Read of the Year award for Entry Island. Peter now lives in South-West France with his wife, writer Janice Hally.
