Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The latest bewitching, kaleidoscopic novel from master storyteller Haruki Murakami, author of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and 1Q84.

Killing Commendatore follows the story of a thirty-something portrait painter who, after being unexpectedly abandoned by his wife, retreats to a secluded mountain home that once belonged to a famous Japanese artist. In his solitude, he attempts to start anew, spending his days painting, listening to classical music, and enjoying whisky in the evenings. This tranquil yet desolate routine is disrupted when he stumbles upon an unusual and powerful painting hidden in the attic, entitled "Killing Commendatore".

This discovery propels him into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and surreal encounters. As he delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the painting, he becomes entangled in a series of enigmatic events including the persistent toll of a mysterious bell, the intriguing presence of a perceptive and talented thirteen-year-old girl, a chilling assassination plot from the era of Nazi Germany, and encounters with a spectral underworld.

Weaving elements of magical realism, Murakami masterfully blends the mundane with the supernatural. The novel explores profound themes of love, art, war, and loneliness, bringing them to life through a narrative that is both haunting and mesmerizing.

Killing Commendatore is not just a tale of one man's isolation and exploration of his inner self, but a mesmerizing and intricate tapestry that compels readers to reflect on the hidden secrets within their own lives. Murakami's keen observations on the human condition and the extraordinary camouflaged within everyday life make this book a truly astounding piece of literary artistry.

About the Author

In 1978, Haruki Murakami was 29 and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers' award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, which turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon. His books became bestsellers, were translated into many languages, including English, and the door was thrown wide open to Murakami's unique and addictive fictional universe. Murakami writes with admirable discipline, producing ten pages a day, after which he runs ten kilometres (he began long-distance running in 1982 and has participated in numerous marathons and races), works on translations, and then reads, listens to records and cooks. His passions colour his non-fiction output, from What I Talk About When I Talk About Running to Absolutely On Music, and they also seep into his novels and short stories, providing quotidian moments in his otherwise freewheeling flights of imaginative inquiry. In works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84 and Men Without Women, his distinctive blend of the mysterious and the everyday, of melancholy and humour, continues to enchant readers, ensuring Murakami's place as one of the world's most acclaimed and well-loved writers.
